Isolation Rooms

Viruses and respiratory infections can be transported via droplets in the air. The residuals of these droplets in air can be suspended in air, dry and produce small particles of various sizes. They may:

  • Contain viable microorganisms
  • Coated by dry secretions
  • Remain suspended indefinitely in air
  • Be transported over long distances

Required Engineering Controls

Since these particles pause a health risk, patients with infectious diseases are isolated into spaces that have the following controls:

  • Use negative differential pressure with air flow monitoring
  • Must achieve the minimum ACH defined by ASHRAE standards
  • Air exhaust immediately to outside the building
  • HEPA filters installation to allow for recirculation of air
